Here is an interesting and fun way to check your driving style and the effect it is having on the environment. The Fiat 'EcoDrive' system,first announced last year at the Frankfurt Motor Show, caused a stir at the recent Geneva Car Show.

From this month certain Fiat models,including the 500,will be delivered with the Blue & Me gate enabling through a USB key driving data to be collected.So as you drive away you plug in the USB key. Then when you leave your car you take away the USB key and connect it to your PC. You can then access charts and reports presented in a clear and easily understandable way about your driving,with tips and solutions to improve your performance.

This system helps you achieve the optimum performance for your car which you probably would never get near otherwise. Why is this so? Well, the published consumption and CO2 emission figures are ,for consistency, derived from road tests by professional drivers under 'control' conditions i.e. certain test track road surfaces, with ancillary car equipment switched-off like the heater,radio,air conditioning. In normal conditions, you may travel on rural,urban and motor ways at different times, and in varying weather conditions. There is also your own individual driving style which may throw-in another variable when comparison is made with the manufacturer's published performance for a car.

Fiat collaborated with Microsoft on this piece of technological wizardry,a driving aid which in similar form may be soon common in most new cars.

The Citroen C1- Probably the Most Economical Car in the UK?

It's official. The Citroen C1 Diesel has the lowest fuel cost of any conventionally powered car available to buy in the UK today.
At a fuel cost of £736 over 12,000 miles, this makes this thrifty little motor cheaper to run by half than many large family cars.
Who says so? The Department of Transport's Agency, the VCA, that's who, when it announced its latest New Car Fuel Consumption& Emission Figures ahead of last week's Budget.

With just 109 g/km of CO2 emissions,the C1 Diesel offers further good news of money saving. Annual Vehicle Excise Duty is just £35 per annum. For Londoners, the congestion charge could soon be a fat zero with this car if the expected exemption is introduced later this year. This could save a regular driver in the congestion charge area a potential £1,500 a year.

In closing, let me remind you of another in the Citroen family, the C4 1.6 HDi with automatic electronic gearbox,which has a parsimonious fuel spend of just over £800 for 12,000 miles driving.It,too,is in the sub-120 g/km of CO2 club. Enjoy,too, more family space in this 5-door hatchback.

Th!nk big for the environment in this small electric car


I promised you a further little gem from the recent Geneva Motor Show.No,I do not really have an 'only small is good policy' in these pages.There will be plenty of larger and more powerful (but fuel efficient) cars regularly featured on lec.

However, it is good to see another 'green' city runabout coming to market.Later this year, Norwegian carmaker Think, and self-proclaimed 'carmaker of the 2st Century',launches the new fully electric powered Th!nk.It was well received in Geneva.Made for city driving,this is a proper modern urban car,a two-seater with a top speed of 65mph. On just an overnight top-up,the Th!ink's fully charged battery will enable it to go 124 miles in urban driving.Nought to 30 mph acceleration in 6.5 seconds,this car will only set you back about £125 in electricity costs for 10,000 miles of motoring!

It is a truly environmentally-friendly car,emission-free and 95% recyclable.The body is made of a special unpainted ABS plastic which is dent and scratch resistant.The batteries are returned to the supplier at the end of their useful life.

Power steering,central locking,electric heater and mirrors and windows come as standard.Options to add will include air conditioning,pre-heat timer,radio CD with MP3,USB,Bluetooth, and a navigation system, and 2+2 children seats.

I am advised that orders in the UK for the Th!nk will be taken in the last quarter of this year. At £14,000,or thereabouts,it may seem a little pricey compared to other currently available small urban motors with green credentials.But that £125 for its power costs over 10,000 miles is worth checking-out,so,too, is the whole recyclable aspect.

Think is a company now finding its time has come,having struggled to survive in its early days - the company is 17 years old-and the future looks green and profitable.

Another small car tomorrow - probably the most economical in the world currently available -and in following days we'll try to find something a little larger to consider.

Low emission smaller cars with big ideas from Fiat

With an array of models ,which come under the bar set by the Mayor of London of 120g/km of CO2 , Fiat is expressing its determination to lead when it comes to environmentally-friendly cars.

Sub-120 means qualification for the vehicle excise duty (VED) A or B band and a 100% discount from the congestion charge.

No congestion charge then , from 27th October 2008, for drivers of cars which meet the Euro 4 standard for pollution emissions. These include:

  • the new Fiat 500 1.2 litre and 1.3 16v ,at 119 and 110 g/km of CO2 respectively
  • the Grande Punto 1.3 MultiJet Active and Dynamic 3-and5-door models (119g/km)
  • the new mid-size Bravo 1.6 MultiJet 105 with Special Eco-pack (119g/km)
  • the Panda 1.3 litre MultiJet Dynamic (114g/km)

The i-popping Q from Toyota

Flush with success from its Prius sales,Toyota feel confident that it can very quickly flex its green credentials by turning the tiny,eco-friendly, iQ concept,unveiled just six months ago at the Frankfurt Motor Show, into a production reality ,and put it on sale before the end of this year.

Dubbed the "world's smallest four-seater passenger car", the intelligent iQ can seat three adults and a child . Wider than a Smart,it is less than 3 metres in length.

This car will find its ideal home as an urban runabout. It has a 500cc plug-in powerplant. CO2 emissions will be at 99 g/km scoring a Euro NCAP 5 rating.

Toyota expect to be making 100,000 units of the iQ in its first full year of production.

Of the successful hybrid,the Prius ,a Toyota spokesperson says,"By 2009 we are expecting demand in Europe to more than double to 70,000 units."In 2007, European sales of the Prius were at 32,000 units, up 40% on 2006.

And there's more...Toyota is also working on another plug-in hybrid concept, the 1/X. This is said to be an extremely light car combining plug-in hybrid and flex-fuel technologies.Although a third the weight of the Prius, the 1/X will have the same interior space, and its efficiency will deliver 62 miles for a little over 2 litres of fuel.

Toyota seem to be steaming ahead with their plans to stay in the forefront of the drive to produce more ,and more efficient, cars.

Green Sounds in a Hue of Blue at the Geneva Car Show

At the 78th International Auto Show in Geneva the visitors, 700,000 in total expected during the event upto 16th March,are well into their stride.According to the Geneva Tribune, they " will be overwhelmed by soothing shades of blue." It would seem that green technology,and there is more of it again this year,has been cloaked in a marketing make-over of blue.There are many cars going under names like Blue Motion,Blue Lion and Blue Tech.

Size also matters.A few years ago,very small cars,and particularly electric cars,would not have been given 'house' room bigger than a broom cupboard.Now,Tata have unveiled outside India the Nano to wide public interest,and Toyota is showing a microcar less than three metres long.So going smaller and alternative energy technology often go hand in hand in the drive for economy and efficiency for the family car.

Other headline notes are:
  • Volkswagen premieres the Golf TDI Hybrid -this 1.2 litre diesel concept is designed to emit less than 89g/km ogf CO2 and deliver 83 mpg
  • VW also unveils a natural gas-fuelled car - the Passat estate TSI EcoFuel- it uses 5.2 kilogrammes of gas per 100 kilometres
  • Again,from,VW is the Sharan BlueMotion - (shown above in a less than blue hue)
  • All-New Ford Fiesta Twins make a debut
  • KIA Soul concepts and eco-c'eed Duo to star at Geneva
  • SEAT are to show a landmark concept
  • SAAB defines its future design with the 9-X Bio-Hybrid concept
  • The Hyundai HED-5 i-Mode concept said to hint at a future MPV production model
  • and the previously mentioned Toyota iQ takes a bow
So,plenty of new production cars,together with glimpses of the future with the new technology concepts. A main theme of the show remains,though, the drive by many manufacturers to improve the efficiency of many of their existing models.

Oh What A Motor Show!At Geneva its a Case of the Two E's:Efficiency and Emissions.

In Geneva,Switzerland,the largest Motor Show of its kind in Europe will be officially open to visitors tomorrow.One headline is that car manufacturers are tussling with the challenges of a decline in demand from the mature markets(e.g.North America,Spain ,Italy)but are experiencing burgeoning demand from the emerging markets like Russia,India and China.VW's chief is expecting a 25% growth this year from its China business alone.

Anyway let's return to the stars of the Show. And the big stories are likely to be lithium-ion battery charged.It is said that Toyota will officially announce that it is going into mass production with its lithium-ion batteries for low-emission cars.Mercedes are also charging-up a 'C' class with same technology.Weighing-in,too, will be General Motors which is developing its hybrid Chevrolet Volt. And,among the quirky,comes the sporty Rinspeed sQuba,also powered by lithium-ion batteries,which has the capability of underwater swimming.

There will be much more as the Show goes on,including a tasty-looking all-new five-door Ford Fiesta (shown above).But we need to look at its green credentials.There will be production model launched in the Autumn based on the lines of the Verve concept.There will be a sub-100g/km CO2 emission model, the ECOnetic version - some further details are posted at the Green Car Guide website.

Self professed Smart car 'nut',Paul Jackson, has written a history of the Smart car : the city-coupe,fortwo,crossblade and roadster coupe.This is the story thus far from 1998 and the promise of major worldwide sales in the future. This is 128 pp packed with text and 100 colour pictures.There are highs and lows. Failures and successes.It is in paperback, and 140mm tall X 140mm.

This is written by a guy who has owned many Smart cars.He seems to know what he is talking about and is prepared to share his experience and expertise of this small low emission car.

The Greenline is another Fab(ia)Skoda


Earlier in the day, I covered a currently available Fabia estate a frugal 1.4 TDI at 120g/km emissions of CO2.Another in the Skoda family will soon be available,as of 21st April.The Fabia Greenline 1.4 TDI hatchback (shown above) can only be described as fabulously frugal.At nearly 69 mph consumption on the combined cycle,and CO2 emissions of a mere 109g/km,this is truly lean and green.Skoda says,the estate version of the Greenline models is probably the greenest and leanest estate currently for sale in the UK for the money - around £12,140(the hatchback- £11,490)

Just to put the performance another way, one tank of diesel should enable the Greenline driver to achieve a distance of 689 miles.


The 120g/km CO2 car club just got bigger

As promised,here is another car,in a short series of posts,with emissions of no more than 120g/km.The new 1.4 TDi PD 80bhp model of the Skoda Fabia Estate has a combined fuel consumption of 60 mpg, and it is on sale now.

Let's remind ourselves what the benefits of the 120g/km club are in a addition to saving on fuel costs : Road tax costs of just £35.00 ,and, if the revised Congestion Charge proposals for London are approved no charge

With 1,460 - litres of luggage space,this is an estate that won't cost you a royal ransom. The costs range between £9,360 and £13,775.

There are other versions of this car in the range that do not qualify for the sub-120g/km club.But Skoda's average CO2 emissions across its range is an improving and creditable 152g/km.

As to popularity,between 2001 and 2007,over 30,000 of the earlier models were sold.

Making a Big Splash in March Suzuki's new mini-MPV


This post starts a mini series featuring new cars currently,or very shortly to become, available to buy in the UK.

First-up is the Suzuki Splash an all-new mini-MPV. It is available with a 1.3 litre diesel engine.Fuel consumption is 62.8 mph ,and CO2 emissions 120g/km which means annual road tax of just £35.It also comes with a diesel particulate filter to virtually eliminate any unburnt particles.

Green Car Guide
reports :

"The 75 PS 1.3 litre 4-cylinder common rail turbo diesel is built in Suzuki's new engine plant in India under licence from Fiat, and is mated to a
5-speed manual transmission.

The Splash uses the Swift platform which should promise enjoyable handling even though this car is taller and has a higher seating position" - the high roof gives the Splash a feeling of spaciousness.

The front-wheel drive 1.3 DDiS model has a top speed of 103mph, and a specification identical to GLS+ grade. Available from 1st March,this model is estimated to cost £9,500.
Green Car Guide also says,"The Splash and its very similar looking sister car, the Vauxhall/Opel Agila, were engineered in Japan with initial styling work,chassis development and driving evaluations carried-out in Europe by Suzuki."

London Congestion Charge? Who wants it?


Well, it seems no one, of course.The latest London Mayoral edict will continue to penalise those with cars emitting the most CO2 emissions.Some residential rights to a discounted rate of charge will go in October this year.A pity really. Some vehicleswill attract a £25 a time charge.Many others with emissions between 121g/km and 225g/km will continue to pay the standard charge of £8.

So what is the headline ,in this change to an emission-based charging system? The message is join the club as owner of a sub-120g/km car to escape the congestion charge. Car manufacturers are falling over themselves to provide cars which emit CO2 below the 120 g/km threshold.

There are Fiats,BMWs and Minis,Citroens,Toyotas,Peugeots, and 31 Renaults, and others, that come below the 'bar' set at 120g/km.There is a choice. The Green Car Guide has it sussed. For a list of all the cars currently emitting 120g/km or less you can go to the Green Car Guide by clicking here.

Air Cars-so much hot air?Or what?

Cars that run on a few pence worth of compressed air, and with zero emissions? You bet.
Guy Negre, a former F1 engineer has spent many years in his Air Car Factories developing for commercial use ,a car that can travel at around 80 mph for 200 km on a 3 minute 'fill-up' of compressed air costing about £1.50. According to BBC News reports the vehicle with fibre glass body actually works, though it needs some refinements yet to make it look and sound 'normal'.With investment from Indian giant conglomerate Tata, the air car could be on sale next year in certain markets,at a price equivalent to £2,500.That sounds a good deal,even if the vehicle's use may be more suited and limited to city and suburban motoring rather than long distance travelling.

Vehicles powered by compressed are not new.The first were around over 100 years ago.However,it seems the technology became a victim of the oft common deterrent to developing propulsion without petrol based fuels,the vested interests of the oil industry which probably were responsible for an air car not being developed for commercial production before now.

Though the air car may now have its time, and a place as one of the emerging technologies to combat the rate of climate change,it has to find acceptability both in practical distribution and as a driving experience.The petrol engine may not be seriously unchalleged for a while yet,but keep a sharp watch out!

Corgi shows that even model green cars can make a difference- H2Go hydrogen-powered car wins 2008 ToyAward
At the Nuremburg Toy Fair, Corgi International has won the 2008 Toy Award (in the Electronics and Technology category)with the H2Go a revolutionary hydrogen-powered radio controlled car.

Proving that you can make it big by starting small,Corgi confirmed its reputation as one of the leading toy manufacturers world wide.Corgi's Chief Executive,Michael Cookson,said,"We are delighted about the great trust placed in our H2Go.The H2Go is not just a radio-controlled car featuring new technology but also a symbol of the toy industry's impending adjustment to a future powered by clean energy."

This may seem a strange post to have in a place devoted to the full-sized car model.But the message about clean energy is clear. It shows that like motorsport where dramatic improvements in clean energy technology can and are being be tested for use,if successful,in the production of more and better low emission cars,the toy industry,too,can make a significant contribution in this direction.

Want a New Car? Spoilt for Choice? More opportunities for Greener Motoring.Knowing what to buy-that's the thing.


Choosing a new car is getting much harder.But the good news is that the right information for you is available.You just need to know where to look. At low emission cars we continue to work to help you look in some of the right places.

According to a report from EurotaxGlass, UK buyers will be able as from this month to choose from more than 7,000 different model derivatives - a derivative is one that would qualify by body style,engine capacity, and so on ,for its own entry in a carmaker's price list- a 75 per cent increase over the 4,000 available in 2000. No wonder car buyers' heads are spinning? And they have the added problem ,if they wish to drive greener ,of sorting out the truly efficient and least CO2 emitting ,from the rest.

Today, we feature another sub-120g/km club entrant. A growing category. The Green Car Guide reports :

"The new Fiat Bravo, 1.6 MultiJet 16v diesel unit delivers 62.7mpg in the combined cycle (an increase of 5 mpg on the standard 105 bhp 1.6 MultiJet) and CO2 emissions of just 119g/km. This also makes the Bravo the first car in its category to be fitted with a Euro 5-compliant engine, well ahead of the 2009 deadline.

"To achieve 62.7mpg, the Bravo comes in 105 bhp form and in a special eco-package. In addition to revised engine ECU settings, this ‘Eco’ pack employs special measures similar to Volkswagen’s BlueMotion range including optimising the aerodynamics, incorporating low rolling resistance tyres and ‘taller’ gear ratios. Without the eco pack, the engine delivers 57.6mpg – and 129g/km - the same as the 120bhp version."

Is the bio-fuel solution just a green fantasy?


In this week's issue of Autocar, it is reported that world consumption of oil is currently running at 1,000 barrels a second.By 2030,this consumption rate is expected to have increased by a further 70%! Clearly, with oil supplies dwindling and the rate of climate change causing almost universal concern, something will have to happen to prevent environmental and economic disaster on a global scale.

Do bio-fuels offer a credible solution? You've got to hope they will provide one of several sustainable solutions to divert catastrophe.

Autocar further reports General Motors boss, Rick Wagoner, as saying at the Detroit Motor Show that his firm is supporting an American company which reckons it can turn almost anything into ethanol to fuel cars.The technology is so close to full development that car grade ethanol ,from most waste materials, like old rubber and plastic,agricultural waste, and so on, could be in production in three years'time.Current cars can be easily converted to using bio-fuels.This could take the heat off bio-fuels, currently seen as potentially taking the food out of people's mouths, with its great appetite in production for grains.

Bio Power

Another business that has nailed its colours firmly to the mast of the bio-fuels tanker,so to speak,is the Saab Motor Company.Covered here before (See lec at Friday,March 30,2007), the BioPower hybrid (seen above)has many high profile celebrity fans including Sir Richard Branson who owns one.

The use of bio-fuels as a significant part of the total solution to the problem of CO2 emissions and imminent energy shortages now seems far from green fantasy.

  • bio-fuels are in fact a stepping stone to a longer-term goal

500 is Fiat's number



Earlier this week,FIAT Group Automobiles UK Ltd launched the new Fiat 500 with a flight in one of the British Airways London Eye capsules.

Exactly 500 hours into 2008, a fantastic light show lit up a showbiz and celebrity event on the banks of the River Thames.

Around 500 VIPs, including Kelly Osbourne, Jade Jagger, Eva Herzigova, Eddie Jordan, Leah Wood and Lawrence Dallaglio with 1,500 others were invited to the all-ticket
launch event.

Also,there were 500 Fiats old and new in cavalcade.Everyone was treated to fantastic live performances from pop sensations Mika, The Feeling and The Vibrants.

Speaking about the Fiat 500,Fiat Managing Director, Andrew Humberstone, says: “We are confident that this car, with it stylish looks, economical consumption figures, outstanding safety features and ‘green’ credentials, will win a place in everyone’s hearts.”

While the new Fiat 500 is airborne for two weeks, members of the public have the chance to win a Fiat 500 in an interactive design competition being staged at the London Eye until 3 February.

Keeping the Wheels spinning at the Detroit Auto Show

In Detroit the major,and the not so major (but up and coming-if that can be said of China!), carmakers have converged to put on a world class show of automotive excellence.There are more than 30 all-new cars making their world debuts,say Auto Express.

And ,green is the colour of intent,though ideas are in evidence ahead of substance.
As previously reported,last time,the Japanese car manufacturers are most convincing with their low emission technology claims of winning the race to produce the batteries necessary for their hybrids.The Americans though are anxious to show what they are doing.Chrysler have put up a trinity of concept cars described by their spokesperson,Frank Klegan, as "pure concepts". This seemed to signal showcased ideas which might make it eventually into production some time.Enter the Jeep Renegade (bluetec diesel), Dodge ZEO (electric)(shown above), and Chrysler ecoVoyager(electric with hydrogen cell 'range extender').

Talking about the three new Chrysler concepts, Simon Elliott, Managing Director of Chrysler UK, said: “Providing exceptional fuel economy and reducing emissions is part of Chrysler’s environmental commitment. In fact, we have already seen some of the benefits of our green approach in the UK with the launch of so many Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge models with fuel-efficient diesel engines in the last few years."

Carmakers Plug-in Their Green Technology at the Detroit Motor Show


Well, 'ere we go again with the first major motor show for 2008. This is the big one opening this weekend, and the battle lines are truly drawn in the green car market stakes. All the established,and some not so well known ,carmakers are showing their determination to make a difference with new concept and production cars which are more fuel efficient and have reduced levels of harmful emissions.

AFP, the global news agency, today report General Motors chief Rick Wagoner as saying during previews of the show ,which opens to the public from 19th to 27th January,that new green technologies are a "business necessity and an obligation for society." This truth has been taken very much to heart in the US where the gauntlet has been thrown down to the Asian carmakers in the battle to win supremacy in the fast-growing market for green cars.

One big fight will be between General Motors and mighty Toyota. As well as conventional hybrids, we can expect to see results of the accelerating pace of development in the plug-in cars. These are the rechargeable cars which can be literally plugged-in to be recharged at any electrical socket. The pressure challenge still ahead is to mass-produce these cars in order to make them safe and commercially viable. GM are still looking to get its Chevrolet Volt into production by 2010.Toyota,now believed for the first time ,according to the Financial Times,to be the world's top selling car company ahead of GM is feverishly working to crack the technology to be able to mass-produce the lithium-ion batteries essential for its plug-in hybrids.

So,there will be the sleek, the magnificent,the fast,the expensive ,the economical, the large and the small ,all in a fascinating mix being showcased in Detroit. I hope to report on some of the more "muscley" cars that will be on show, over the next week or so.But, in the meantime,let me leave you with the quirky, "the Book of Songs" concept electric car (appropriate now that all makers are tending towards singing from the same green hymn sheet) from the Hang Lua deign studio, shown at the top of this post. This just a glimpse of the presence of the Chinese carmakers and designers who will be at Detroit in numbers, and who are really a growing force in world carmaking. More in a day or two.

8 New Year Brief Tips for Greener Motoring

In order to save money by reducing your fuel consumption, and thereby the amount of CO2 emissions you put into the atmosphere, you may wish to consider buying a greener car this year. In the meantime, you can cheaply do the following:

1.Watch Your Weight

Not your personal weight,of course, but the weight being carried by your car. Everyday, we often carry in our cars items in the boot or backseat (portable cement-mixer, hedge-trimmer,empty suitcase,golf clubs unused forever, you know the things) which have been there for weeks and not thrown away, or not been returned to their proper place in the home or garage.Sometimes we set out on our motoring holidays with this excess weight ,and also too much holiday stuff.
More weight means more cost to move the car. Is our family ,shown above, just taking too much stuff, just in case...?

2.Keep correct tyre pressures

With extra weight your tyre pressures should be increased, in accordance with the manufacturer's manual that was issued for your car. Correct tyre pressures make for better safety, slower tyre wear and tear,and greater fuel efficiency.

3.Go with the Flow

By this ,I mean try to avoid 'drag' caused by interfering with the smooth flow of air over your car when in motion. Baggage piled high on the roof ,with bits hanging off here and there, and out of the boot ,will greatly decrease fuel efficiency(it may even be considered an illegal or unsafe load!)
Open windows (and boot) also result in poor aerodynamics.

4.Turn-off the air-con,and other onboard accessories ...

...when these are not really necessary.Dress for the weather and you may not need the airconditioning which can increase fuel consumption by upto 10%. The impact will be less when travelling at a legal and constant speed on a motorway.Other gear ,like the radio and the rear screen demister, can also markedly sap power.

5.Watch Your Speed

Accelerating gently to a legal maximum speed,as road conditions allow,predicting traffic at junctions braking gently, and when in queues not accelerating and braking harshly, all will help fuel economy, and reduce the rate of brake disc and tyre wear.Driving techniques can affect car fuel efficiency by upto 30 %. Drive smoothly.

6. Stop and Switch-off

You must not do this (when in neutral, or otherwise!) drifting downhill, any saving is negligible and it is highly dangerous. Much the better course is to switch-off your engine when stationary for more than a few minutes. Shorter periods could see an increased rate of fuel consumption because of the fuel required to ignite the engine. The acquired skill is to find the right time and period to do this.

7.Using the right gears

For fuel-efficiency, you should drive in the highest gear possible without labouring the engine.

You can ,for example, use 25% more fuel at 40 mph in third gear than at the same speed in a fifth gear.

8.Drive off promptly

Always try to drive off promptly rather than leave your engine running when stationary which is wasteful in fuel.

Why the Smart car's been sent to Coventry


An early green Christmas present of a fully electric version of the Smart has been delivered to Coventry City Council.

The iconic car is the first of 100 cars to be delivered as part of a UK-based market trial for the introduction of a fully electric version of the popular two-seater (smart ed).

The car will be made available on a lease arrangement to selected UK corporate customers. It sets a new benchmark in the electric vehicle sector; it has 30kW output and a top speed of 60 mph. It offers nippy in-town performance with 0-30 mph in 6.5 seconds. With a range of up to 70 miles, the smart ed is exempt from vehicle excise duty and congestion charge.

Coventry City Council will be using the electric smart within their fleet of pool vehicles. This facility allows employees to leave their cars at home when they travel to work, but to still have access to a vehicle for business journeys.

Dermot Kelly, Managing Director Mercedes-Benz Cars, said: “This market trial is an important part of our commitment to sustainable mobility and the first car to be delivered is a significant milestone for smart and Mercedes-Benz Cars.”

Cllr Gary Ridley, Cabinet member for Climate Change, Housing and Sustainability said, "The Council is proud to be the first owner of the new electric smart and is glad to be part of the drive for new cleaner and greener technologies in cars. To make its running costs even greener, the electricity used to recharge the car is from renewable resources. As the biggest employer in the city, we should be leading by example and encouraging other businesses to think about their carbon footprint and their impact on their environment while carrying out their day to day activities."

The smart ed emits no carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, unburned hydrocarbons, particulate matter or any harmful substance – in fact it emits nothing at all. It retains all the safety equipment you would find on a regular smart, so unlike other electric cars, a smart ed has ESP, ABS brakes two airbags and seatbelt pre-tensioners.

In terms of practicality, the car has its own charger on board, which means it can be plugged directly into any UK mains 3 pin plug socket to recharge. A meter on the dash swivels through 90 degrees so it is possible to see the state of battery charge

This market trial is supported by Cenex, the UK’s first national Centre of Excellence for low carbon and fuel cell technologies. Cenex is a project partner and will be assisting in the field trial phase of the project.


The drive train for the smart ed is produced in the UK by technology partner, Zytek Group, who undertake final assembly of the smart ed in Fradley, near Lichfield.

The agile Vauxhall Agila will fit in at 120g/km CO2 emissions







This is one to watch for in 2008. Vauxhall’s New Agila will offer low emissions and a low price when it arrives in showrooms in April.

Available to order from early next year, the compact newcomer benefits from CO2 figures of just 120g/km on both the entry-level petrol and diesel engines, meaning it will fall into VED Band B – the cost of a tax disc being just £35 a year.

The Agila is small enough to be manoeuvrable into tight parking spaces, but has five doors, five full-size seats and good luggage space.

The tall roofline provides a spacious feel and a high seating position, making it easy to get in and out, and helping with good visibility.

The Agila has an all-new chassis, three new engines and an automatic gearbox will be available for the first time. Petrol units include a 1.0-litre three-cylinder unit developing 65PS and an 85PS 1.2, the latter of which will be available with optional automatic transmission. Vauxhall’s 75PS 1.3CDTi diesel will also be on offer.

The Agila will cost from only £7,595. Three trim levels will be on offer, all with good levels of standard equipment, plus a versatile interior layout.

The rear seat backs can be folded down to create a completely flat load floor on all but the entry-level model, providing a luggage capacity of 1050 litres.

Volvo invests in Green Forestry to reduce carbon emissions








It seems ,contrary to what we might think,all is not green in the forest. By way of a sort of Christmas related story ,I include this item, not about a car though but a green vehicle. The Volvo Group, once renowned for building 'clunky' cars before selling its cars division to Ford, has bought into the producer of the El-forest forwarder which is the world's first forestry machine that uses energy efficient electric-hybrid technology.

The El-forest forwarder is designed to reduce carbon emissions by cutting fuel consumption by one-half. Volvo will help this innovative equipment into service much quicker. The first forwarder will be delivered next year to the state-owned Sveaskog -
Sweden's largest forest owner.

And the Christmas connection? Well, looking at the picture above, a caption could perhaps be added, something like : "Hey,be careful! That could be my Christmas tree."

The bio-powered Saab 9-3 revisited






On June 24th this year,we first looked at the introduction of more powerful and economical diesel and petrol into the Saab 9-3 range,and the availability of the BioPower flex-fuel engine.The latter capable of delivering 200hp running on bioethanol E 85 fuel (or any blend from 0-85% of the bio-fuel with petrol).

Revisiting this greener model, the Green Car Guide has this to say, "Saab has recently refreshed the styling of its entire 9-3 range, with a new front end inspired by the Aero X concept car, complete with ‘eyebrow lighting’ above the headlights. This makes the iconic Convertible even more appealing, and with the BioPower option, you can even claim that you have a green car – and a sexy one at that. But is it really green, and does it drive as well as it looks?"

There is still a debate out there about competition for the use of crops -food or fuel?Also the the ready availability of the bioethanol fuel is still some way off. There are still only 15 outlets selling this fuel in the UK and they are all owned by Morrisons. Of course ,increased demand for the bio-powered car would increase the investment given over to fuel distribution. On the competing use issue, there appears to be no one solution to bringing down CO2 emissions from cars to required levels to help reduce the rate of climate change. Whether it is hydrogen,hybrid technology,electricity,or super efficient petrol and diesel powered cars, there is probably in the balance of things a place for biofuels.

Fiat 500 Voted Car of the Year 2008

Launched in July and promising to be the
most eagerly awaited car for many a year, the Fiat 500 scooped the top award as Car of the Year 2008 when ,this month, 57 out of 58 specialist journalists on an international panel from 22 European countries voted for the super-compact. Auto Express, the car news weekly, in its list of New Cars for 2008 places the 500 at the top of its 10 Most wanted, ahead of the Jaguar XF at number 2.Described as 'retro without being kitsch...fresh,funky and fantastic to drive' ,the 500 is destined to go places.

The Green Car Guide
says that 'Fiat has announced prices of the eagerly-awaited new Fiat 500, which goes on sale in the UK in January.

'And the good news is that prices start at just £7,900. At the top end of the range, a highly specified version with a larger engine costs only £10,700 – including air conditioning and alloy wheels as standard.

'The 500 is available with a choice of three Euro 5-ready engines: 69 bhp 1.2-litre and 100 bhp 1.4-litre petrol, or 75 bhp 1.3-litre MultiJet turbodiesel. The base 1,242cc petrol engine returns 55 mpg economy and emits 119g/km of CO2. The 1.3 Multijet diesel can manage 67.3 mpg on the combined cycle and CO2 emissions of 111g/km.

'The 500 can be ordered in three different trim levels – Pop, Sport and Lounge. Standard equipment in the entry-level Pop includes ABS anti-lock brakes with EBD, driver, passenger, side and driver’s knee airbags, radio/CD/MP3 player, power steering, electric mirrors, colour coded bumpers and chrome-plated door handles. The options list includes ESP, glass sunroof, metallic paint and parking sensors.

'Sport and Lounge versions start at £9,300, while specifying a larger engine in any trim level adds £1,400. Standard equipment on both Sport and Lounge versions includes the Blue & MeTM hands-free media system, air conditioning and 15” alloy wheels. Sport specification includes a rear roof spoiler, fog lights, sports interior and dark tinted rear windows, while Lounge trim includes a split, folding rear seat and fixed glass roof.

The Fiat 500 goes on sale through Fiat’s 162-strong UK dealer network in January 2008.'

Honda offers a solution with FCX Clarity

At the Los Angeles International Motor Show this month, Honda have unveiled their FCX Clarity hyrogen fuel-cell powered car, with plans to begin a limited marketing of the vehicle next summer.

The FCX Clarity is described by Honda as ' a next-generation, zero-emission, hydrogen-powered fuel cell vehicle based on an entirely new Honda V Flow fuel cell platform, and powered by the highly compact, efficient and powerful Honda V Flow fuel cell stack. Featuring tremendous improvements to driving range, power, weight and efficiency – and boasting a low-slung, dynamic and sophisticated appearance, previously unachievable in a fuel cell vehicle – the FCX Clarity marks the significant progress Honda continues to make in advancing the real-world performance and appeal of the hydrogen-powered fuel cell car.'

The vehicle's only emission is water!

The plan is to introduce the FCX Clarity into service by a leasing scheme to a limited number of consumers in Southern California,US in the summer of 2008. Presumably, if this works out ,production will be stepped upto to meet market demand. As mentioned previously, a restriction on use will be the current limited availablity of refuelling facilities. One solution, in a recent post here on lec ,is the home generation unit ,also being developed by Honda.(see 16th November 2007)

This latest generation has other ground-breaking features for the driving comfort of the driver, using advanced materials technology to produce,for example , a new eco-friendly bio-fabric ,for the upholstery and door linings,with remarkable stretch and fit qualities.Furthermore,
Honda say you can expect:

* a 20 per cent increase in fuel economy (about 2-3 times the fuel economy of a petrol-powered car, and 1.5 times that of a petrol-electric hybrid vehicle, of comparable size and performance);
* a 30 per cent increase in vehicle range – to 270 miles (approximately 430 km);
* a 120 per cent improvement in power-to-weight ratio, in part due to around a 400-pound (approximately 180kg) reduction in the fuel cell powertrain weight, despite a substantial increase in overall vehicle size;
* a 45 per cent reduction in the size of the fuel cell powertrain – nearly equivalent, in terms of volume, to a modern petrol-electric hybrid powertrain;
* an advanced new lithium-ion battery pack that is 40 per cent lighter and 50 per cent smaller than the current-generation FCX’s ultracapacitor;
* a single 5,000-psi hydrogen storage tank with 10 per cent additional hydrogen capacity than the previous model

Carmakers now producing a better shade of green

When looking at the green credentials of carmakers, we usually go for the absolute performance of a particular model in terms of CO2 emissions. For example,this car is a sub 100g/km,...or that car is within the limit for congestion charge exemption, and so on. Often we lose sight of the improvements in relative performance and emissions control won in recent years, employing the new technologies developed for body-styling,tyres,engine-types,fuels,
gears, brake systems ...the list is long.

Last week the weekly car magazine, Auto Express, featured the results of a survey conducted by the Clean Green Cars website.This showed which cars really had become cleaner and greener during the first nine months of this year compared to the same period in 2006. Apparently, not all the brands surveyed had improved ,Suburu (6%) and Audi (3%) being noted for some average increase in CO2 emissions. A table of the 10 leading 'reducer' manufacturers was reproduced in the magazine showing the BMW-owned MINI, with 17.1% average decrease in such emissions, at the top. At the bottom ,with 3%, was Hyundai. The MINI range of cars had reduced its CO2 output from an average 182g/km to 151g/km. A significant amount of CO2 still, but a large improvement.

Honda Home-in on a Solution for the Shortage of Hydrogen

How strange to be talking about the shortage of hydrogen! This is one of the few elements in almost limitless abundance on our planet,though it's more often found as a part of water. But for the upcoming generation of hydrogen cars having a ready supply of the gas in the right places for re-fuelling is of course essential if elusive.The demand for a gas distribution system is new. Honda with a vested interest in this are working hard to provide the solution.

The home ,it seems, is where the answer lies. Honda are experimenting with a home generation kit ,which will also avoid the need to use electricity grid supply for the home heating and other domestic use. Natural gas is used in the Home Energy Station IV to generate the fuel both for the hydrogen-powered fuel cell vehicle and domestic heat and light requirements.

This fourth-generation unit is being 'road tested' in California and

“Honda is striving to address the need for a refuelling infrastructure for hydrogen fuel cell vehicles,” said Ben Knight, vice-president of Honda R&D Americas. “The Home Energy Station represents one promising solution to this issue, while offering the added benefit of heating and powering the home more efficiently.”

So here we are looking at a solution that can reduce CO2 emissions by 30% and save energy costs by 50% for the homeowner who switches from using conventional grid supply and driving a petrol-powered car. Honda claims the current unit, over the first unit produced for test in 2003, is 70% more compact making it a feasible proposition for installation as a dometic appliance.

As usual we shall continue to watch these groundbreaking developments as they move ,hopefully,from the experimental testbed into the home.

Wash n' green-up after Tokyo Motor Show

Well,was it a Honda clean sweep? Or did Toyota come away with the green credentials with its low emission concepts and imminent production models?

The Sunday Times suggests Honda are ahead by a nose with a surprise announcement of having a production hydrogen car for sale next year in America and Japan- the cost (£50,000)will be less than for many current conventional family saloons on the market.This puts them upto 20 years ahead in terms of what was generally expected.The big question,however,is where will you fill it up? Honda is content to say that if there is demand for the new fuel, distributors will make it available to meet the demand.

In the other corner, the other manufacturing heavyweight,Toyota, was banking on electricity to drive its ultra low CO2 emission and low cost runner.Flagged as better than the Prius,the Toyota prototype on test and planned to be on sale in 2009, will most probably be eventually fitted with lithium-ion batteries that are more compact and lighter than its nickel-hydride test kit. Honda ,though,is not convinced that further development of hybrid models is anything more than 'an expensive sideshow'.

We are just going to have to wait and see.But now,it is likely that we are not to be kept waiting too long.

Other 'greening'carmakers were also at the show,of course-Mazda,Mitshubishi,Suburu and Suzuki were there, as were Volvo and BMW. Notably,Mitshubishi are intent to launch its MiEV Sport electric vehicle in Britain by 2009, reports the Sunday Times.

Hammers plate knocks Arsenal off the Top

Although unlikely on face value and current form,this was a headline story I couldn't resist following.

Apparently last Friday, West Ham shot to the top of the premier league of personalised registration numbers today when the licence plate WE57 HAM went for a record-breaking £57,000 at auction.

A fierce bidding war erupted at the DVLA Personalised Registrations sale in Bishop’s Stortford as dozens of die-hard fans of the club battled it out for the ultimate Hammers status symbol.

And that sent the price rocketing and forced the winning bidder, who bid anonymously over the internet, to smash the previous record for a football-related registration – the £36,000 paid for AR53 NAL in 2004.

Damian Lawson, Marketing Manager for DVLA Personalised Registrations, was delighted by the huge sum fetched by the star lot.

He said: ‘The atmosphere in the auction room was electric – it was like a cup final. The fans bidding showed the same passion they do on the terraces and we could only watch as the price kept on rising and rising. We knew there was going to be a lot of interest and we thought there was a good chance the plate could knock AR53 NAL off the top of the table but we couldn’t believe just how much it went for.’

Though not in the normal line of low emission car posts,I thought some of you out there might find this story sad,or amusing,or great,...or whatever.

The Next Generation No or Low Carbon Hondas



Honda has confirmed plans to bring its most exciting ‘green’ cars into production. In addition to the production version of the FCX hydrogen fuel cell car to be unveiled next month at the LA Motor Show and scheduled to go on sale in the US and Japan in 2008,Honda will launch a compact lightweight sports coupe based on the CR-Z concept (above) and powered by a hybrid powertrain at adate date yet to be announced .

The recent announcement by Honda’s President and CEO, Takeo Fukui,marks the beginning of the next generation of environmentally-friendlier vehicles ,sporting designs likely to appeal to a wide audience.

“Hybrids have always been seen as niche products, and hybrid car design has mostly been based around practicality and versatility,” says John Kingston, Environment Manager at Honda (UK). “The CR-Z Concept looks stunning, and shows that green cars can be sexy and exciting – but also minimise environmental impact."

Honda will be looking to sell over 1/4 million hybrids a year by 2009

The CR-Z Concept follows in the tyre prints of the Honda Remix Concept (seen at the LA Show last year), and the Small Hybrid Sports Concept (first out at Geneva in March) all of which explore the potential of a compact sportscar that’s exciting to drive, but has minimal impact on the environment.

New Smart fortwo adds up, or does it?


Believe it or not, it is seven years ago that the first Smart cars hit our streets. This diminutive and energy miser has developed and new models are, or are about, to become available (although how many for UK supply is in question). Three models - Coupe (pictured),Cabrio and Brabus- are featured in an extensive road test report at the green car guide. A diesel version of one model ,with particulate filter ,has a consumption performance of 85.7 mph ,and 88g/km of CO2 emissions ,making it a clear no nonsense sub-100g/km club member.

Green for the Earth from Subaru


Here's a little beauty expected to be shown at the upcoming 40th Tokyo Motor Show later this month, the G4e concept.Although a compact in dimensions,this new environmentally-friendly electric car with a triangular body shape will be a true five-seater.Fitted with the next generation batteries,its light weight and all round high-performance are designed by Suburu, owned by Fuji Heavy Industries, to give it a range of 200 kilometres. Auto Express magazine this week reports that the new powerpacks for this car are not lithium-ion but vanadium batteries developed by Suburu.They are said to provide the longer range, and to be more stable and last longer than the current generation of batteries.

Lower emissions with higher performance,today

At the high end,car manufacturers are also making great technological strides to combine luxury with high efficiency and lower CO2 emissions.One such leading brand is Lexus,currently running a high cost advertising campaign for the world's first all wheel drive luxury performance hybrid saloon.

The flagship model is the new hybrid powered LS 600h.This went on sale at the start of the month with demand extending order leadtimes into next spring.Packed full of preventative,active and passive features,and equipped with an advanced powertrain, it is probably the most sophisticated car in its class.This is real luxury motoring.

So what performance can we expect for a little over £80k. The LS 600h 5.0 litre petrol engine with V8 powertrain and high-output motor gives a high performing 0 to 62 mph in 6.3 seconds,higher than its diesel market segment competitors, but with similar combined cycle consumption at 30.4 mph and CO2 emissions of 219g/km.

There are two model variations.One with longer wheel base, the other with the extra length and what is called the Rear Seat Relaxation Package. So though not low emission in absolute unit terms, this generation of luxury cars, to be owned by a relatively low number of people, is to significantly reduce the carbon footprint for its class. Is it a baby Octopus?Electric Nissan Pivo 2 Concept



Nissan is hoping it won't be a white elephant.The electric powered Pivo 2 concept will be shown by Nissan at the forthcoming Tokyo Motor Show.

Green Car Guide writes:

'Powered by advanced compact Lithium-ion batteries and featuring a unique 360 degree rotating cabin – meaning no reverse gear is required – the first Pivo became a cult hit at shows from Beijing to Geneva.

Where the first Pivo, with its fully rotating cabin design, made reversing obsolete, the Pivo 2 takes that easy mobility concept to a new level. Each of the four wheels are powered by Nissan’s advanced electric in-wheel 3D motor and can turn through 90 degrees to allow Pivo 2 to drive sideways as well as forward.

In addition to features such as ‘by-wire’ technologies for braking and steering, the car even features a ‘Robotic Agent’. With conversations possible in Japanese and English, Nissan says that the Robotic Agent has been created to work with Pivo 2 “to make every journey less stressful”. It provides an interface for communication with Pivo 2 on everything from basic vehicle functions to the nearest available parking.

Pivo 2 will be on display at the Nissan Ginza Gallery in Tokyo, for an exclusive public sneak preview ahead of the Motor Show.

Chatsworth Rally Shows off low emission engines

As flagged in low emission cars (17th August 2007),Chatsworth played host to famous world rally stars including Russell Brookes and 1967 Monte Carlo Rally winner Rauno Aaltonen, who made demonstration drives in the new Oaktec Honda Civic Hybrid.

Also making an appearance at the extremely well attended show was the new Bowler ‘Nemesis’, a new specially designed off-road racer running on bioethanol disguised as a Range Rover Sport.

Green Car Guide reports :

‘The two day event included three competitive Special Stage rallies for both Historic and modern rally cars, a pageant of "Rallying History" - featuring many of the world's greatest rally cars, precision and stunt-driving displays - including TV star, Russ Swift, and "Stage Sessions" for owners of competition and modified road cars, giving them the opportunity of driving the special stages under non-competitive "track day” conditions.

Two World and 12 British Rally Champions were among the line-up of star names, including Gwyndaf Evans (1996 British Rally Champion), who set some of the fastest stage times, although he didn’t take the wheel of the Oaktec car.’

The Oaktec team are already looking to building the world’s first bio-fuel/hybrid Super Touring Car to race in the British Touring Car Championship.

Mini Classic turns into a Champion of the Green

Now this is a really exciting opportunity! You could own a real Mini from the 60s, or later, converted to electric power by vehicle specialists, to your own specifications.
