Into water not CO2 that's hydrogen power for you

In a week when Gorden Brown called for all cars sold in 2020 to be either electric or hybrid and emitting 100 g/km of CO2 or less, a British company, ITM, announce a breakthrough in its development of a prototype home refueling station for the hydrogen car. This breakthrough reported by the BBC news maybe the very long term solution for a thirsty oil guzzling world fast running out of supply. For a report click on Red Herring.

Though, in addition to continuing concern from some university academics about the sustainability of the energy used to produce the hydrogen as a fuel-it requires electricity to generate it- there is the 'chicken and egg' twist. There is no refueling infrastructure to support a large number of hydrogen cars,and too few cars to encourage the investment in such an infrastructure. Assuming the technology is sound-the wonder material converting water into hydrogen (and oxygen) is a newly developed polymer-and the sustainability aspect is dealt with (use of renewable energy: from, wind,wave,solar etc.) then the market will develop the necessary refueling stations,and the car manufacturers are already working hard to produce the cars. Take Honda,for instance.

On November 16,last year, low emission cars reported-Honda home-in on a solution to the shortage of hydrogen- that Honda was trialling the Home Energy Staion 1v using natural gas to generate hydrogen for a hydrogen fuel-cell car and to provide power for domestic heat and light. ITM,too have seen that its refueling prototype can be a domestic appliance for driver convenience, although it does seem that the range of 25 mile per refuel is a practical limiting factor at present... something about the need to incorporate fuel-cell technology to extend range ,some scientists say.

The jury may still be out on the ITM project to provide the revolution the oil-strapped economies need, there clearly are going to be hydrogen cars in the mix in the near future. Honda is one manufacturer investing heavily in hydrogen power. Its FCX Clarity
hydrogen fuel cell car (lec archive:November ,2007) is currently being leased on a limited trial basis to drivers in the US. It seems clear there will be other exciting developments announced in this area of zero emission motoring in the coming months.

Vehicle Excise Duty increases:more than 9m car owners will be worse-off, admits HM Treasury


Vehicle Excise Duty and CO2 emissions together are currently very much in the news. The above startling statistic has been admitted by the Treasury in a parliamentary answer. It has emerged that only 4.1 million motorists representing just 18% of the 21.9 million cars that will be on our roads by 2010/11 will be better-off. The Government believe over 9 million motorists will be worse off contrary to earlier official statements made at the time of the March budget.

From April 2010,the maximum VED will be £455 ( increased from £210) for the highest CO2 emitting vehicles registered between March 2001 and March 23,2006. Later registrations will also attract a higher duty.

Although the appliance of heavy VED rates to pre-2006 car registrations smacks of retrospective taxation (not good), the inescapable fact is that the Government is committed to tackling climate change(which is good) and sees raising money in this way the answer (debatable).The heavier polluting cars are, therefore,going to be subject to ever increasing taxes over the next few years. However painful,and many families are going to be seriously affected in the short run,it will eventually pay financially to keep abreast of emerging new car technology and new production models of the more environmentally-friendly cars.

In emphasising its commitment to more fuel-efficient cars and in turn reducing running costs, the Government has launched a consultation on the compulsory CO2 emission targets proposed by the European Commission.
The Government would like to see a longer term target of achieving 100g/km of CO2 by 2020.

The high iQ to deliver top class fuel economy and low emissions

The Toyota iQ is an ultra-compact which can carry up to three adults plus a child in comfort. Emphatically proving that small does not mean basic, the iQ is a completely new proposition for urban motoring that is stylish, sophisticated, technically advanced and kinder to the environment.

Further details released by Toyota reveal that, at less than three metres long, the iQ is wider and has a longer cabin than a Toyota Yaris. It achieves a breakthrough in small car packaging to deliver unprecedented interior space, thanks to a series of interlinked engineering innovations.

Furthermore, a newly developed differential allows for a more compact engine compartment and for the front wheels to be pushed out to the very corners of the car. An ingenious steering gear design enables the engine and differential to be repositioned, giving the car a shorter front overhang.

Overall length is reduced thanks to a flat under-floor fuel tank and rear-angled shock absorbers, while a significantly smaller heater/air conditioning unit takes up less cabin room, allowing the front passenger seat to be moved closer to the base of the windscreen. The result is an extra 100mm of cabin length compared to Yaris and shoulder room similar to that offered by a Toyota Auris.

Passenger space is further helped by an asymmetric dashboard design and slim, sculpted front seats that optimise leg room for those sitting in the rear. The 3+1 seating configuration provides comfortable space for three adults – plus a seat for a child or luggage space behind the driver.

iQ has a thoroughly contemporary and forward-looking design inside and out, the interior styled on a “techno-organic” theme with geometric precision and high quality materials. The dashboard is a stand-out feature, with its floating V-shaped centre console.

Production of iQ is due to start later this year with UK sales scheduled for spring 2009. Two petrol and one diesel engine will be available, which, together with the car’s light weight and aerodynamic shape, will deliver exceptional fuel economy and low emissions. Details of the powertrains and equipment specifications will be announced later.

The upcoming British International Motor Show from 22nd July at Excel will unveil several super efficient green cars in competition including the eco-friendly ECOnetic version of the Ford Fiesta,VW's Polo Bluemotion, and that other supermini the SEAT Ibiza ECOmotive with a sub-100g/km CO2 emissions.

High performance car tyres that will give you 20% less rolling resistance and more miles

When it come to high performance motoring that maximises the use of fuel and therefore significantly helps to reduce CO2 emissions,Michelin can show a long time collaboration with Peugeot to combine innovative and performance enhancing developments in engineering,designing and tyre technology. The result is that Peugeot have shod its latest 308 with the new Michelin Energy Saver tyres.



According to Michelin, its technological solution generates fuel savings of nearly 0.2 litres per 100 kilometres in combined cycle driving, resulting in a reduction in CO2 emissions of nearly 4 grams per kilometre. This represents around a one tonne reduction of CO2 emitted into the atmosphere over the entire life of the vehicle. The Peugeot 308 HDi 110 (at top) has a published fuel economy of 60.1mpg (combined), CO2 emissions of 129g/km and Peugeot’s latest Diesel Particulate Filter System (DPFS) technology. Its Michelin all-new Energy Saver tyre,originally exclusive to Peugeot reduces tyre rolling resistance by 20% and correspondingly improves overall fuel economy and environmental efficiency. It is worth repeating that CO2 output can be reduced by up to 4g/km with these tyres, reaching a total reduction of potentially 1 tonne throughout the vehicle’s life. Michelin have now put these tyres into the replacement market and are available for a wide range of vehicles. The expanding low CO2 range of cars from Citroen

Going it green its way,Citroen majored on a range of low CO2 cars at affordable prices, at the Green-Car-Guide Live! Motor Show held earlier this month. The company believes the way forward is to concentrate on reducing the environmental impact of its cars using affordable (more conventional - my words- Ed) technology within the budget of the average motorist. For Citroen this is more effective than a "few very expensive and headline grabbing hybrid cars." [at low emission cars we will encourage all options for lower CO2 and other harmful emissions-Ed]

At the recent Green-Car-Guide Motor Show, Citroen exhibited the following cars:

- C1 Rythm 1.0i 3 door city car with newly reduced C02 emissions to 108 g/km
- C2 VTS 1.6 HDi 110hp the newly launched green diesel hot hatch supermini (or "The Urban Sportscar " as it has been dubbed by Citroen) with 119 g/km CO2 emissions
- C4 VTR + 1.6 HDi 110hp DPFS EGS Diesel family car with 120 g/km of CO2 emissions (also a Coupe version)

In the above, DPFS stands for Diesel Particulate Filter System, EGS stands for Electronic Gearbox System, both systems have been designed to help squeeze that little bit more out of every litre of fuel.

As to affordability, you can be looking to put a C2 on the road from £8,625. But look around before you buy.

Looking forward, there will be no less than 5 UK show debuts on the Citroën stand (S11) at this year’s prestigious British International Motorshow running from the 23rd July to the 3rd August at the ExCel centre in London’s Docklands. These first appearances include, the C-Cactus - an electric concept car never before seen in the UK, but reviewed here last year on 18th September when it appeared at the Frankfurt car Show. Mazda 2 show stopper with the green car capacity to amaze

Covered here last month, the Mazda 2 was one of the show stoppers at the Live!2008 Green Motor Show held in Liverpool on 12th June, so it is worth repeating the deal for those who may have missed the details. So here we go again on a great little car.

The three-door version of the Mazda2 TS 1.3 petrol starts at just £7,999, giving you a lightweight, economical car for low cost.

Already 2008 World Car of the Year, the new Mazda 2 stable adds a 3-door version to the 5-door. Economy and performance are driven by the use of lightweight high-tensile steels and new technology.


Weighing in at 100kg lighter than the previous model, the all-new Mazda 2 comes as a1.3-litre petrol engine,or a 1.4 diesel,and from July you will be able to buy a 1.5 103 ps petrol powered version. The 3-door and 5-door are the same size,and have a generous spec worth checking out, including front airbags(both sides),remote central locking,multipurpose glovebox,alarm and immobiliser, and so on.

With a high 5-star Euro NCAP crash test rating, the Mazda 2s can deliver a fuel economy of up to 65.7 mpg, and CO2 emissions from 114g/km. This is a quality ,low cost, good ,performing car. You can go for a 'Sport' 3-door from £11,399,or the TS from under £8k-there are models priced in between. Oh,I nearly forgot to mention the road tax (VED) rate at a probable £35 per annum-Band B (101-120g/km). Check it out.

Green-Car-Guide Live!2008 Motor Show Report

Green-Car-Guide Live! 2008, sponsored by Masternaut Three X, took place on Thursday 12th June 2008 at the new award-winning Arena & Convention Centre in Liverpool, and was the UK’s largest Green Motor Show. On display was a range of the latest energy-efficient vehicles that can help motorists and fleet operators save money on running costs.

The low carbon vehicles exhibited ranged from city cars through to executive cars and commercial vehicles. Vehicle technology included petrol, diesel, biofuel, hybrid and electric, and there were also a number of ‘show stoppers’ including from the world of motorsport.

Toyota Yaris is a Top Green Car for 2008

The supermini Toyota Yaris was a star for me at the Liverpool Live!2008 Green Motor Show. The Environmetal Transport Association (ETA) think the car is the tops,also. It has just declared in time for Green Transport Week (14th -22nd June) the Yaris to be its Car of the Year for 2008 ahead of the Honda Civic Hybrid (2nd) and Toyota Prius (3rd), with the Renault Modus coming in at 4th place.

The other placings were: Citroen C1 (5th),Toyota Aygo (6th),Peugeot 107 (7th),Renault Clio (8th),Toyota Auris (9th),and the Suzuki Swift in 10th place.

The ETA reviewed over 1,300 vehicles in its hunt for the winning car, concentrating on power,emissions,fuel efficiency and noise levels. Several of the top ten cars chosen are ranked amongst the greenest cars available in the UK.

The Toyota Yaris is available in three and five door versions. The 1.4-litre D-4D 90 has a frugal economy of 62.8 mpg in the combined cycle. With CO2 emissions of just 119 g/km there are further running cost benefits including a Vehicle Excise Duty of £35 per annum. What a great deal! More details at Toyota UK site

             3-in-1 post following the Live!2008 Green Motor Show



First up of a mini-series of posts,following the highly successful first Green Motor Show to be held at the Echo Arena in Liverpool, covering three of the green products featured. One,the Volkswagen Golf BlueMotion proudly showed-off its green credentials. With its BlueMotion badging, it joins the Polo (also at the show) and Passat in introducing the greatly efficient management system, with software and gear ratios making for idling speeds and engine running that goes to achieving a competitive fuel economy of 62.8 mpg and CO2 emissions of just 119 g/km (and therefore a VED of £ 35 per annum). Two,represented at the show was Green Motion,the eco-friendly vehicle hire operation. Founded in 2005 by Richard Lowden,Green Motion is a stand out operation working tirelessly to meet the increasing demand for environmentally-friendlt and fuel-efficient vehicles for hire. It is most appropriate that last week, Green Motion took delivery of the first of its Golf Blue Motion (to join its sister car the Polo Blue Motion already in the fleet)extending the range of vehicles available to customers. At Green-Car-Guide Live!2008, the UK's largest Green Motor Show:petrol,diesel,biofuel,hybrid,LPG,electric vehicle technology,you name it it was there...

This was a great show, held this week in Liverpool at the new and very impressive Echo Arena and Convention Centre. There were many of the very latest green vehicles available to be seen like Seat's Ibiza Ecomotive shown above outside the Convention Centre,the sleek and very expensive executive style Lexus flagship LS600h petrol-electric,the Mazda 2 ' a right little belter',the Subaru Legacy Outback, and the Smart Fortwo, to list but a few.

Also,there were the green 'service' companies represented, including the rental company Green Motion,and the hire car company WhizzGo.

At the cutting-edge of technology,we also had amazing commercial vehicles,trucks and vans like theMOdec electric van,the Gas Dual Fuel HGV and the Volkswagen Caddy EcoFuel Van, which will all probably play a major role on our roads in the fight to reduce CO emissions and the consumption of fossil fuels.I must also mention Mammoth Racing and Oaktec (Honda Civic Hybrid Rally car) representing motor sport and the exciting developments taking place in low emission car racing.

How to hang-on to your carbon emissions to produce more fuel for your car

If you could have a system that collects your waste to produce more power with little impact on the environment, you would probably go for it,right? Well,this could be for real for you and many motorists, soon.

The 3-door and 5-door are the same size,and have a generous spec worth checking out, including front airbags(both sides),remote central locking,multipurpose glovebox,alarm and immobiliser, and so on.

With a high 5-star Euro NCAP crash test rating, the Mazda 2s can deliver a fuel economy of up to 65.7 mpg, and CO2 emissions from 114g/km. This is a quality ,low cost, good ,performing car. Audi A3 now with lower emissions

Audi is claiming that it has reduced CO2 emissions across the range,through improvements boosting efficiency in its petrol and diesel engines. Upto 15% reductions have been achieved in new and improved existing engines to be on the market from July this year.

Models such as the 1.8 TFSI S tronic will deliver a reduction taking total CO2 emissions from 179g/km down to 153g/km.

Over the last few weeks, much emphasis has been placed here, and in other forums, on the sub-120 g/km cars. These often are seen to benefit the planet most, and they can be tax efficient,too. Sometimes the claims of manufacturers have been challenged - laboratory performance may not equate with actual road performance. Though this maybe true, the fact is that cars are becoming more fuel efficient and less polluting. So,here and now, we should applaud the continuing efforts to drive-up efficiency and drive-down levels of pollution. There is no 'silver bullet', unless cars were to be banned overnight.

The Nissan Pivo a car with no CO2 emissions and no reverse

For a short period, 24th May to 1st June, there is a an opportunity to see the amazing futuristic Nissan Pivo, a concept car touring with a new exhibition called the The Science of Survival, at the Science Museum in London.

Generating none of the emissions of most current road vehicles, the Pivo has also dispensed with the need for a reverse gear. When it needs to reverse it relies on a 360-degree swivel of the whole of the driving cabin. Blind spots are eliminated with the use of screens which show the exterior around the vehicle. Looking not unlike a cartoon creation for a Walt Disney film, the Pivo provides further all round visibility through large doors ,windscreens and windows. But this is serious technology from Nissan for the future, adopting lithium-ion battery power.

The Science of Survival is a new, hands-on, family exhibition, which uses the latest environmental research to challenge visitors to create their own sustainable city of 2050. The exhibition highlights possible ways of changing and adapting how we live to ensure that we will be able to survive in 2050. The Science of Survival runs at the Science Museum, London until 2 November 2008, before touring internationally.

The Pivo is a great example of latest thinking in environmental inventions and devices to help ensure we survive in 2050.

Chevrolet Matiz 0.8: It's a muscle car,Jim,but not as we know it...

With apologies to Star Trekkers (and, to lover's of the 'Chevvy' Corvette), today's report is largely from the Green-Car-Guide :

Chevrolet, a maker of American muscle cars in years gone by, has now gone into the business of cars that are very un-musclular.

The latest Matiz 0.8S is yet another car that will be clogging up the streets of London when the new congestion charge swings into force in October, as it will enter the capital for free with its emissions of just 119g?km of CO2 (subject to a £10 registration fee), which translates into a combined fuel consumption figure of 54.3 mpg. 

Yes,this is the sane emissions figure as a 118d -along with an ever increasing range of other models. The difference is that the Matiz is petrol rather than diesel,so if you have an aversion to diesel but want to drive in London, then this could be the car for you.

Of course, it has benefits for motorists outside the capaital, with Band B road tax classification meaning a Matiz buyer will pay just £35 a year at current rates of tax this year.

The Matiz has a Group 1A insurance and a fixed price servicing package costing £199 for three years/30,000 miles, or £399 for three years/60,000 miles.

All models include central locking, immobiliser ,power steering, tinted glass, a Blaupunkt RDS radio/CD player and body coloured bumpers as standard.

And, it costs just £6,245. So you could buy one of these and a classic Chevrolet Corvette for the same cost as an average new family saloon.

It could be a NICE (No Internal Combustion Engine) car time in London with new Mayor Boris Johnson's support

At least that's what the people over at the Nice Electric Car Company are now hoping it will be.

As the owners of the Mega City, they are concerned that the new Mayor will as promised reform the congestion charge in London, but are expecting their  zero emission car to continue to enjoy no charge status and  free parking making it an irresistable proposition for Londoners keen to look for ways to contain their ever increasing motoring costs.

With petrol and diesel costing more than £5 a gallon , meaning for the owner of a medium-sized car doing 35 mpg a cost per mile of about 14p, the NICE people say owners of their own cars pay about 1.5p per mile, or one tenth of that cost - and with zero CO2 emissions, no annual road tax.

The NICE Company will be at the Excel British Motor Show from 23rd July to 3rd August this year to exhibit once again its current models for greener motoring , and to reveal its plans for electric models in many different market segments by the end of the year.

Road Tax (VED) benefits of lower emissions will shape price of used cars in future

Thinking ahead when buying your next car could help keep your motoring affordable.In the last Budget Chancellor Alistair Darling laid the latest Treasury delayed action fuse , by announcing new rules for Vehicle Excise Duty to explode into effect next year. You are now looking at more CO2 emission-sensitive rates allocated to 13 Bands, from the current seven, classified from A-M. Starting with Band A for the sub-100g/km emitting cars (at no charge, as before ) through to Band M for the highest polluters above 255 g/km attracting a hefty £440 cost per annum. Where your car falls in the CO2 ranges will therefore determine what you pay, and as your car is one of the heftiest capital cost items for your budget planning well ahead will pay-off.

The seven current Bands for petrol and diesel cars- g/km CO2 range and tax rate-are:

A 100 or less £0
B 101-120 £35
C 121-150 £120
D 151-165 £145
E 166-185 £170
F 186-225 £210
G Over 225 £400

You can expect car guides to be quoting tax bands and rates in future. At low emission cars,we will also be adding the current tax band when quoting a CO2 rating for any particular car featured here. The publishers of the Black Book,CAP, say they have intoduced CO2 figures in the Black Book because they believe VED rates will become as influential on consumer choice as fuel economy and insurance costs. PS We are not going to able to take our eye of this one! The Treasury suddenly announced (on the 29 April 2008) that it was abolishing an existing VED exemption on higher road tax rates for vehicles emitting more than 225g of CO2 per kilometre registered between March 2001 and March 2006. Clearly, there could be other 'tweaks'- we will never advocate a change merely to raise extra tax in such a stealthy manner from people who made their vehicle choices years ago, when the low emission options did not exist. You will need to watch out over the coming months. We will try to help you achieve affordable and greener motoring.

Mazda to be awarded for outstanding innovative in-depth study to achieve cleaner diesel engine exhaust emissions

In May,the Mazda Motor Corporation will be given the prestigious 'Outstanding Technical Paper  Award 2008' by the Society of Automotive Engineers of Japan for its research into the combustion process of catalysts in particulate filters to cut down still further the amount of 

emissions,particularly soot, released into the atmosphere.

Mazda will soon be applying its analytical methods to improve car performance, and reduce CO2 emissions.

For current Mazda models you should go to the Mazda website. You can also find a review of the Mazda 6 which went on sale in the UK in January at the Green Car Guide. Though a much improved model on performance,there is probably still more to be done in the 'green' sense.

Lowest Average CO2 emissions that's Fiat

According to a recent analysis by JATO Dynamics, automotive specialists, Fiat has the lowest average average CO2 emissions among the 10 best-selling car manufacturers in Europe for vehicles sold in 2007.

The top brands ranked as follows:

This survey shows that manufacturers are committed to finding innovative ways to reduce carbon emissions.

By 2009, Fiat expects all its engines will meet European standards for emissions. It is reported that the Fiat 500 (shown above) and the Fiat Bravo are already Euro 5-ready

Volkswagen Polo BlueMotion achieves 740 miles on one tank of diesel

The Volkswagen Polo represents what can be achieved in the struggle to reduce carbon emissions. It has a 1.4-litre diesel engine but, by a series of small adjustments ,VW have produced a high fuel performance (74.3 mpg) and low, 99 g/km, CO2 emissions. Aerodynamics,engine and gear 'tweaks', low resistance tyres and special light weight wheels,help to coax the Polo Blue Motion to achieve the parsimonious fuel consumption.

This Polo is a classic example of what can been done in small steps to develop an efficient and environmentally-friendly car. The Norwich Council is so taken with it, its ordered 50 of them.

The Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation (RTFO)

From 15th April, the RTFO comes into operation. So what does it mean?

Green Car Guide reports :

"The Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation (RTFO) requires 2.5% of all road fuels sold to come from biofuels ,rising to 5% by 2010. It's claimed that this will save 2.5 million tonnes of carbon dioxide by 2010 and is part of a package of measures being taken to reduce the impact of transport on the environment- although some critics claim that biofuels cause more harm than good, and so a review into biofuels is also underway."

At low emission cars , we feel that all reasonable steps, however small, in the fight to reduce CO2 emissions are worthwhile. Biofuels is just one part in the overall solution. The debate on the sustainability issues is very important and must continue, and the balance in the economic use of crops (fuel versus food) carefully weighed.

Ford help take some of the heck out of check for tyre safety and to reduce CO2 emissions  

Ford can now provide an automatic system that checks to ensure your car tyres have not deflated. The tyre pressure monitoring system  works while the car is in motion, and alerts the driver with an alarm and visual instrument warning, if the pressure in one tyre or more needs attention.

Ford are at pains to say that though their system provides an effective warning system it does not replace the need for regular driver pressure checks.

It may, however, critically detect a weakness or puncture which would not otherwise have been spotted.

The Deflation Detection System (DDS) uses the same sensors as the anti-lock brake and stability systems. Ford customers are currently able to specify DDS for the Focus and Kuga. 

Another type of system, the Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) is available for the Mondeo, S-Max and Galaxy. This system works with sensors in each of the wheels to measure any loss of pressure.

Obviously, this is a huge safety feature. It is also an excellent way, through constant monitoring and action , to ensure pressures are always at a level to maximise fuel performance and,therefore, keep CO2 emissions to a minimum, for the type of car being driven. 

72% of UK companies surveyed recently agree with you that switching to greener cars will not cost more

At least, if you have been following these pages for a little while ,you will now probably agree that switching to lower carbon emitting cars does not cost more and can actually be a significant money saver. A recent influential report from the Energy Saving Trust reckons that UK companies could save up to £3billion a year if they switched their fleets to cars in the sub-120g/km of CO2 emissions class to take advantage of the tax breaks and improved fuel consumption.

The EST , from their sample survey of 400 board-level executives, report's that probably 28% of UK companies believe that such a switch would cost money (by deduction I arrive at the headline 72%- Ed).

 The sub-120 g/km club for low emission cars just got bigger again with the Suzuki Swift

Suzuki are driving down costs for drivers of their Suzuki models. With the 1.3-litre DDiS model of the Swift,the CO2 emissions are now lower,and the total running cost is lower,too. At 119g/km of CO2 this car rates for a saving of £80 on the road tax, and from late October this year will qualify for London Congestion Charge exemption, which for a driving commuter means a probable saving of £2,000 per annum.

Engine performance delivers 61.4 mpg in the combined cycle. The attractive Swift comprehensive spec comes as standard: radio/CD player, remote central locking and immobiliser, electric windows,electric and heated door mirrors,steering-wheel mounted audio controls and tinted. The 1.3 DDis also provides air conditioning,alloy wheels,front fog lamps and key less entry and start. Impressive,but to be fair, you would expect most if not all these items when shopping for a current supermini. So do check them out before you buy.

And there's the safety consideration also. The Swift has collected impressive awards from Euro NCAP for occupant,child and pedestrian protection.

NFU 100 not-out champions new low-emission Peugeot 308

The National Farmers Union (NFU),which is celebrating its 100th birthday, has taken delivery of a plant-powered 5-door S HDi 90 Peugeot 308. Using a 30% blend of biodiesel (B30)produced from British oil seed rape and used cooking oil,the NFU' s 308 has achieved CO2 emissions below 100g/km.

As part of the NFU's backing for biofuels, the trial car is to be driven around the country on business to farming communities by chief renewable energy adviser Jonathan Scurlock who says,"Biofuels can be made from a variety of plant material such as vegetable oils,wheat and sugar beat, and can greatly reduce carbon emissions while meeting practicable environmental standards of production." In this way, he sees farmers and growers are already making a vital contribution to reducing climate change,"while at the same time ensuring UK food security by providing fresh,quality produce,"he says.

Using the B30 fuel , while reducing carbon emissions, does not effect car performance, according to Peugeot Managing Director,Pierre Louis Colin.

Peugeot report that all its HDi models made since 1998 can run without modification on a 30% blend of biodiesel with the mineral diesel ,known as B30.

Though there is currently a limited number of forecourts selling the B30 biodiesel , more biofuel processing plants are under construction on Teeside,Humberside and in Norfolk.

Hyundai asks if you have an 'i' for a bargain- the i10 comes with a great deal

In the current financial climate,consumers are going to be wooed even more ardently than previously by car manufacturers with 'special' deals.Hyundai is one such manufacturer,with a range of efficient and low CO2 emitting cars.They are selling on the basis of excellent value.

Take the 5-seater,i10 1.1 litre, for example,which comes with a spec to check. At 119g/km CO2 emissions and 56.5 mph on the combined cycle ,this is an economical city car with so much on it as standard.Air con,electric front windows,power steering,stereo radio+CD player,front and side airbags,and tinted glass are all thrown in.

The i10 competes in its class with the Toyota Aygo ,Fiat Panda and Citroen C1.It saves at £35 on road fund licence,is likely to be exempt from the London congestion charge,and should also be competitive on motor insurance costs.

So if you are a first time car buyer,or looking to downsize because of the tax and CO2 savings the i10 could be just for you.As a further sweetener Hyundai is trying to make it as affordable as possible.For a limited period,until 30th May 2008,the company is offering Personal Contract Purchase (PCP).This arrangement can provide a flexible purchase option,with low,fixed,monthly payments.But you do need to check it out to make sure it suits your specific requirements. Here is an interesting and fun way to check your driving style and the effect it is having on the environment. The Fiat 'EcoDrive' system,first announced last year at the Frankfurt Motor Show, caused a stir at the recent Geneva Car Show.

From this month certain Fiat models,including the 500,will be delivered with the Blue & Me gate enabling through a USB key driving data to be collected.So as you drive away you plug in the USB key. Then when you leave your car you take away the USB key and connect it to your PC. You can then access charts and reports presented in a clear and easily understandable way about your driving,with tips and solutions to improve your performance.

This system helps you achieve the optimum performance for your car which you probably would never get near otherwise. Why is this so? Well, the published consumption and CO2 emission figures are ,for consistency, derived from road tests by professional drivers under 'control' conditions i.e. certain test track road surfaces, with ancillary car equipment switched-off like the heater,radio,air conditioning. In normal conditions, you may travel on rural,urban and motor ways at different times, and in varying weather conditions. The Citroen C1- Probably the Most Economical Car in the UK?

It's official. The Citroen C1 Diesel has the lowest fuel cost of any conventionally powered car available to buy in the UK today.
At a fuel cost of £736 over 12,000 miles, this makes this thrifty little motor cheaper to run by half than many large family cars.
Who says so? The Department of Transport's Agency, the VCA, that's who, when it announced its latest New Car Fuel Consumption& Emission Figures ahead of last week's Budget.

With just 109 g/km of CO2 emissions,the C1 Diesel offers further good news of money saving. Annual Vehicle Excise Duty is just £35 per annum. For Londoners, the congestion charge could soon be a fat zero with this car if the expected exemption is introduced later this year. This could save a regular driver in the congestion charge area a potential £1,500 a year.

In closing, let me remind you of another in the Citroen family, the C4 1.6 HDi with automatic electronic gearbox,which has a parsimonious fuel spend of just over £800 for 12,000 miles driving.It,too,is in the sub-120 g/km of CO2 club. Enjoy,too, more family space in this 5-door hatchback.

Th!nk big for the environment in this small electric car

I promised you a further little gem from the recent Geneva Motor Show.No,I do not really have an 'only small is good policy' in these pages.There will be plenty of larger and more powerful (but fuel efficient) cars regularly featured on lec.

However, it is good to see another 'green' city runabout coming to market.Later this year, Norwegian carmaker Think, and self-proclaimed 'carmaker of the 2st Century',launches the new fully electric powered Th!nk.It was well received in Geneva.Made for city driving,this is a proper modern urban car,a two-seater with a top speed of 65mph. On just an overnight top-up,the Th!ink's fully charged battery will enable it to go 124 miles in urban driving.Nought to 30 mph acceleration in 6.5 seconds,this car will only set you back about £125 in electricity costs for 10,000 miles of motoring!

It is a truly environmentally-friendly car,emission-free and 95% recyclable.The body is made of a special unpainted ABS plastic which is dent and scratch resistant.The batteries are returned to the supplier at the end of their useful life.

Power steering,central locking,electric heater and mirrors and windows come as standard.Options to add will include air conditioning,pre-heat timer,radio CD with MP3,USB,Bluetooth, and a navigation system, and 2+2 children seats.

I am advised that orders in the UK for the Th!nk will be taken in the last quarter of this year. At £14,000,or thereabouts,it may seem a little pricey compared to other currently available small urban motors with green credentials.But that £125 for its power costs over 10,000 miles is worth checking-out,so,too, is the whole recyclable aspect.

Think is a company now finding its time has come,having struggled to survive in its early days - the company is 17 years old-and the future looks green and profitable.

Another small car tomorrow - probably the most economical in the world currently available -and in following days we'll try to find something a little larger to consider.

Low emission smaller cars with big ideas from Fiat

With an array of models ,which come under the bar set by the Mayor of London of 120g/km of CO2 , Fiat is expressing its determination to lead when it comes to environmentally-friendly cars.

Sub-120 means qualification for the vehicle excise duty (VED) A or B band and a 100% discount from the congestion charge.

No congestion charge then , from 27th October 2008, for drivers of cars which meet the Euro 4 standard for pollution emissions. These include:

• the new Fiat 500 1.2 litre and 1.3 16v ,at 119 and 110 g/km of CO2 respectively
• the Grande Punto 1.3 MultiJet Active and Dynamic 3-and5-door models (119g/km)
• the new mid-size Bravo 1.6 MultiJet 105 with Special Eco-pack (119g/km)
• the Panda 1.3 litre MultiJet Dynamic (114g/km)

The i-popping Q from Toyota

Flush with success from its Prius sales,Toyota feel confident that it can very quickly flex its green credentials by turning the tiny,eco-friendly, iQ concept,unveiled just six months ago at the Frankfurt Motor Show, into a production reality ,and put it on sale before the end of this year.

Dubbed the "world's smallest four-seater passenger car", the intelligent iQ can seat three adults and a child . Wider than a Smart,it is less than 3 metres in length.

This car will find its ideal home as an urban runabout. It has a 500cc plug-in powerplant. CO2 emissions will be at 99 g/km scoring a Euro NCAP 5 rating.

Toyota expect to be making 100,000 units of the iQ in its first full year of production.

Of the successful hybrid,the Prius ,a Toyota spokesperson says,"By 2009 we are expecting demand in Europe to more than double to 70,000 units."In 2007, European sales of the Prius were at 32,000 units, up 40% on 2006.

And there's more...Toyota is also working on another plug-in hybrid concept, the 1/X. This is said to be an extremely light car combining plug-in hybrid and flex-fuel technologies.Although a third the weight of the Prius, the 1/X will have the same interior space, and its efficiency will deliver 62 miles for a little over 2 litres of fuel.

Toyota seem to be steaming ahead with their plans to stay in the forefront of the drive to produce more ,and more efficient, cars.

Green Sounds in a Hue of Blue at the Geneva Car Show

At the 78th International Auto Show in Geneva the visitors, 700,000 in total expected during the event upto 16th March,are well into their stride.According to the Geneva Tribune, they " will be overwhelmed by soothing shades of blue." It would seem that green technology,and there is more of it again this year,has been cloaked in a marketing make-over of blue.There are many cars going under names like Blue Motion,Blue Lion and Blue Tech.

Size also matters.A few years ago,very small cars,and particularly electric cars,would not have been given 'house' room bigger than a broom cupboard.Now,Tata have unveiled outside India the Nano to wide public interest,and Toyota is showing a microcar less than three metres long.So going smaller and alternative energy technology often go hand in hand in the drive for economy and efficiency for the family car.

Other headline notes are:

• Volkswagen premieres the Golf TDI Hybrid -this 1.2 litre diesel concept is designed to emit less than 89g/km ogf CO2 and deliver 83 mpg

So,plenty of new production cars,together with glimpses of the future with the new technology concepts. A main theme of the show remains,though, the drive by many manufacturers to improve the efficiency of many of their existing models.

Oh What A Motor Show!At Geneva its a Case of the Two E's:Efficiency and Emissions.

In Geneva,Switzerland,the largest Motor Show of its kind in Europe will be officially open to visitors tomorrow.One headline is that car manufacturers are tussling with the challenges of a decline in demand from the mature markets(e.g.North America,Spain ,Italy)but are experiencing burgeoning demand from the emerging markets like Russia,India and China.VW's chief is expecting a 25% growth this year from its China business alone.

Anyway let's return to the stars of the Show. And the big stories are likely to be lithium-ion battery charged.It is said that Toyota will officially announce that it is going into mass production with its lithium-ion batteries for low-emission cars.Mercedes are also charging-up a 'C' class with same technology.Weighing-in,too, will be General Motors which is developing its hybrid Chevrolet Volt. And,among the quirky,comes the sporty Rinspeed sQuba,also powered by lithium-ion batteries,which has the capability of underwater swimming.

There will be much more as the Show goes on,including a tasty-looking all-new five-door Ford Fiesta (shown above).But we need to look at its green credentials.There will be production model launched in the Autumn based on the lines of the Verve concept.There will be a sub-100g/km CO2 emission model, the ECOnetic version - some further details are posted at the Green Car Guide website.

Self professed Smart car 'nut',Paul Jackson, has written a history of the Smart car : the city-coupe,fortwo,crossblade and roadster coupe.This is the story thus far from 1998 and the promise of major worldwide sales in the future. This is 128 pp packed with text and 100 colour pictures.There are highs and lows. Failures and successes.It is in paperback, and 140mm tall X 140mm.

This is written by a guy who has owned many Smart cars.He seems to know what he is talking about and is prepared to share his experience and expertise of this small low emission car.

The Greenline is another Fab(ia)Skoda

Earlier in the day, I covered a currently available Fabia estate a frugal 1.4 TDI at 120g/km emissions of CO2.Another in the Skoda family will soon be available,as of 21st April.The Fabia Greenline 1.4 TDI hatchback (shown above) can only be described as fabulously frugal.At nearly 69 mph consumption on the combined cycle,and CO2 emissions of a mere 109g/km,this is truly lean and green.Skoda says,the estate version of the Greenline models is probably the greenest and leanest estate currently for sale in the UK for the money - around £12,140(the hatchback- £11,490)

Just to put the performance another way, one tank of diesel should enable the Greenline driver to achieve a distance of 689 miles.

The 120g/km CO2 car club just got bigger

As promised,here is another car,in a short series of posts,with emissions of no more than 120g/km.The new 1.4 TDi PD 80bhp model of the Skoda Fabia Estate has a combined fuel consumption of 60 mpg, and it is on sale now.

Let's remind ourselves what the benefits of the 120g/km club are in a addition to saving on fuel costs : Road tax costs of just £35.00 ,and, if the revised Congestion Charge proposals for London are approved no charge

With 1,460 - litres of luggage space,this is an estate that won't cost you a royal ransom. The costs range between £9,360 and £13,775.

There are other versions of this car in the range that do not qualify for the sub-120g/km club.But Skoda's average CO2 emissions across its range is an improving and creditable 152g/km.

As to popularity,between 2001 and 2007,over 30,000 of the earlier models were sold.

Making a Big Splash in March Suzuki's new mini-MPV

This post starts a mini series featuring new cars currently,or very shortly to become, available to buy in the UK.

First-up is the Suzuki Splash an all-new mini-MPV. It is available with a 1.3 litre diesel engine.Fuel consumption is 62.8 mph ,and CO2 emissions 120g/km which means annual road tax of just £35.It also comes with a diesel particulate filter to virtually eliminate any unburnt particles.

Green Car Guide reports :

"The 75 PS 1.3 litre 4-cylinder common rail turbo diesel is built in Suzuki's new engine plant in India under licence from Fiat, and is mated to a
5-speed manual transmission.

The Splash uses the Swift platform which should promise enjoyable handling even though this car is taller and has a higher seating position" - the high roof gives the Splash a feeling of spaciousness.

The front-wheel drive 1.3 DDiS model has a top speed of 103mph, and a specification identical to GLS+ grade. Available from 1st March,this model is estimated to cost £9,500.
Green Car Guide also says,"The Splash and its very similar looking sister car, the Vauxhall/Opel Agila, were engineered in Japan with initial styling work,chassis development and driving evaluations carried-out in Europe by Suzuki."

next week or two.

London Congestion Charge? Who wants it?

Well, it seems no one, of course.The latest London Mayoral edict will continue to penalise those with cars emitting the most CO2 emissions.Some residential rights to a discounted rate of charge will go in October this year.A pity really. Some vehicleswill attract a £25 a time charge.Many others with emissions between 121g/km and 225g/km will continue to pay the standard charge of £8.

So what is the headline ,in this change to an emission-based charging system? The message is join the club as owner of a sub-120g/km car to escape the congestion charge. Car manufacturers are falling over themselves to provide cars which emit CO2 below the 120 g/km threshold.

There are Fiats,BMWs and Minis,Citroens,Toyotas,Peugeots, and 31 Renaults, and others, that come below the 'bar' set at 120g/km.There is a choice. The Green Car Guide has it sussed. For a list of all the cars currently emitting 120g/km or less you can go to the Green Car Guide by clicking here.
